Slowing down also helps you develop your muscle memory, so youll be able to learn new pieces of music on a deeper level. 3. Practice the music faster than the necessary tempo. When you slow down it will feel easier to play. When youre ready to challenge yourself, kick up the tempo on a piece of music that you already know well. You might even enjoy playing your piece along to a  guitar jam track  at a fast tempo, or one with a different groove than youre used to. Dynamics add a dimension of life, power, and meaning to your guitar playing that gets lost if you play only at one volume. Learn how to use dynamics in your guitar playing and make it a regular part of your guitar practice. 24. Focus on articulation â€" accents, staccato, legato. Articulation is all about how you play the notes fast, clear, slurred, or flowing. Hone in on your articulation with these guitar exercises next time you practice. 25. Focus on rhythm. If you like to play pop, rock, or country music, good rhythm guitar technique is absolutely crucial. For extra focus on rhythm, use your left hand to mute the strings while you practice playing rhythm patterns, so you can really focus in on your right hand. 26. Focus on learning new strumming patterns. The more rhythm guitar patterns you know, the more options you have to draw from when youre learning a new song or writing music of your own. 27. Learn to play a new style of music. Try a new style of music to spice up your guitar practice. Even if youre a beginner, you can find plenty of easy country, metal, pop, bluegrass, or any other style of songs to try out on the guitar. 28. Practice playing a musical line or “lick” using a pick and then using fingers. Depending on the style of music you play and your own personal preferences, you might find you prefer flatpicking over fingerpicking (or vice versa). However, its always a good idea to practice both techniques to keep your playing versatile. You might even change your mind or discover a new sound. 29. Learn scales. Scales are the building blocks of chords, riffs, solos, and every piece of music you play. Theyre also a wonderful way to practice your technique. If you dont know any, get started with these. 31. Always start with a warm up routine â€" This might include scales, arpeggios and techniques you are working on. Warming up when you practice helps prevent injury to your hands and, over time, your warm up will help you get focused and ready to play. If you dont have a guitar warm up routine yet, try this one or this one. 32. Learn a new guitar technique. If you havent already, try muting, harmonics, left hand dampening, hammer-ons, or pull-offs to get started. Many people struggle with memorizing new music. Getting a good kinetic feel for the music can be a big help. Try these extra tips to learn new music faster. 48. Dont rush over the rests in music â€" silence is an important part of playing too. Rests may not be the first thing you notice when you listen to music, but you would certainly notice if they were gone! Rests play an important role in the pacing, rhythm, and musicality of every piece of music you hear. 49. Always tune before you practice. Nobody wants to play an out-of-tune guitar! To make sure you sound your best, always tune your guitar before you practice. 50. Reward yourself when you accomplish something that was a challenge. Nobody ever said playing guitar would be easy, so be sure to notice when things that were once challenging become easy. If all of a sudden you can play that hard chord, riff, or whole song in your sleep, thats cause for a celebration. Give yourself a pat on the back and be proud of what youve accomplished. Too Much Vibrato Not Enough How to Control Your Voice Suzy S. Is there such a thing as too much vibrato? Find out about the technique in this guest post by Brooklyn, NY singing teacher Liz T... Have you ever listened to a professional opera or Broadway singer  and noticed how strong their vibrato was? Or noticed how a lot of contemporary pop singers on the radio today do not use a lot of vibrato? In this article, I will explain how to find and control your vibrato to use appropriately when performing. What is Vibrato? To begin with, a simple definition of a vocal vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch. It is used to add expression, and can be characterized by the amount of pitch variation and the speed within the pitch that is varied. Listen to the clip below to hear Liza Minnellis interpretation of vibrato: Opera and Broadway are two common musical styles in which vibrato is used. Singers such as Ethel Merman, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Maria Callas, and Renée Fleming are all excellent singers to listen to for examples. Vibratos usually come into play at the very end of a powerful line or phrase, or at the end of the song to make it more dramatic. Vibrato is created by belting, and making the “word” of the note you are singing sound longer. Some songs are written perfectly for the use of a vibrato. Take for example, the classic song “Don’t Rain on My Parade”, below: This song has strong, powerful, melodic lines with held notes at the end of each phrase, especially near the end of the song (2:40 to the end). By adding a little vibrato, this is going to help you hold the note longer! For singers who are just experimenting singing opera and Broadway, it’s important to begin by finding your vibrato. If you sing these songs completely without vibrato, the style is going to sound very different to the ear. These styles are are meant to sound dramatic and powerful, and without the use of vibrato, the song is going to be lacking in musicality. Now, please note when singing in these genres, there is such a thing as singing with too much vibrato, as well as not enough. When you are singing in these genres, there is no need to add it all the time, really only at the end of phrases to create a dramatic effect. If you start out the song automatically punching out vibrato, it’s going to sound alarming to the listener! On the flip side, there is such a thing as not using enough vibrato. Do Other Genres Use Vibrato? In pop, rock, RB, and country music, you need to have more of a balance of using your vibrato. Not to say you will never use it in these styles, but it’s not what makes these styles work. Riffs, improv, yodels, and a high mix, for example, are things that make these song work. To get a feel for when vibrato does work in these genres, listen to the clips below of Beyonce and Christina Aguilera, two singers who use good vibrato technique. For some singers vibrato may come naturally, while others will really need to work on developing and feeling comfortable using vibrato. My advice to singers is start exploring vibrato by listening to great singers who use vibrato and others who dont, in the specific styles that I mentioned, and to practice belting to some songs that have a great potential for vibrato. Adding specific vibrato exercises, like this one demonstrated by  Jacob O. Nygaard, will also help.  Just remember to control and balance your vibrato, no matter what song you’re singing! 25 Creative Writing Prompts to Practice Spanish Suzy S. Want to perfect your Spanish and put your knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure to practice? Try these 25 Spanish writing prompts that tutor  Joan B  recommends To improve your Spanish, it’s important to apply the concepts you’re learning directly in practice. Writing is an especially helpful  way to do this, since you can develop and practice specific grammatical structures, and then ask for feedback from a native speaker, your tutor, or a teacher. The Spanish writing prompts below  all address specific concepts that are crucial to expressing yourself fully and correctly. Even though there are many fun ways to learn Spanish, this exercise  is very hands-on and your progress will be  noticeable. So grab a pen and paper, and lets get started! 1) Write a one-paragraph biography of your life so far. This can include a variety of past tenses to describe habitual and one-time actions, as well as tenses to describe events that happened before or after another event. You can also practice using sequencing and transition  words such as primero, después, and  entonces.   2) Describe your family. Not only will you be  using family-related vocabulary, youll also get practice describing age and occupation. 3) Create a written sketch of your best friend. Detail why you like him or her, and also make use of physical and personality descriptors (alto, rubio, amable, cómico). You can also explain how you met using the reciprocal verb conocerse. 4) Recount a joke or funny event. This will challenge you to correctly use colloquial expressions as well as unique vocabulary that will take you outside of the box of typical Spanish vocabulary. 5) Relate a specific event, either historical or personal, that occurred. Then rewrite it in the present tense. Bonus points if you rewrite it again in the future tense or the plus perfect tense! This exercise will help you to become faster and more accurate at conjugating verbs in any tense. 6) Write an ad for something (a roommate, an item for sale, etc.). This will help you practice describing cost and specific details (for example, size or shape), as well as expressing requirements and commands in a polite way. 7) Write an opinion piece in which you express your subjective opinions, wishes, and feelings about a controversial issue. This will allow you to practice using the subjunctive mood (when necessary). 8) Discuss an issue that affects the public (a drought, an electricity outage, etc.) and express the impersonal in a variety of ways to give suggestions and recommendations for what people should do (for example, Hay que comunicar  con el gobierno  si). 9) Imagine you are a king or queen what would you instruct people to do? Use command forms (for example, Traiga la comida.) to order others to fulfill your wishes. 10) Write a dialogue between two people. Use question words to form interrogative sentences, and make sure the other person responds with the appropriate verb form (for example, if the question refers to you all, the response to use is we.). 11) Write a short story. Try to make it as descriptive as possible while also including lots of action verbs to move the story along. Have fun with it; it can be a crazy story  with  a creative twist or unexpected angle! Youll certainly improve your Spanish reading comprehension if you write enough of these! 12) Review a book or film. Take a stance and then justify your reasoning, using connecting words like además, pero,  etc. 13) Write an instructional paragraph about how to do something (arrive at a certain location using the bus, cook a particular dish, etc.). Tailor the formality of your words to your intended audience. 14) Write  a letter in Spanish to a long-lost love. What would you say to this person to express your anguish, your delight, your memories, and your regrets? Use diminutives to express your affection for the person. 15) Write a paragraph introducing yourself for a job. Describe your education, skills, motivations, and interests. 16) You completely forgot to do a huge assignment that your teacher is now collecting what can you say to explain why you dont have the assignment to turn in? What compromise can you request in order to not receive a failing grade? 17) Create a short poem it doesnt need to rhyme. Try reading a few poems (check out Pablo Neruda, for example) to find inspiration. 18) Pick an object you know well or have in front of you to observe, then describe the item as fully and descriptively as you can. You can use comparisons (tan    como) and superlatives (el más). 19) Describe an ideal world (for example, No habrá.). This is another opportunity to use the future tense. 20) Write a letter to another foreign-language student. In the format of a pen pal letter, explain what you like about learning Spanish, what you find difficult, what you hope to use Spanish for, and why you decided to learn a foreign language. 21) Convince someone to adopt your position on an issue. Use persuasive language (en mi opinión es necesario.) to convince them of the strengths of your argument and the weaknesses of theirs. You can choose a political topic, a personal decision, or anything else that can be argued for or against. 22) Write a short gratitude note what are you grateful for today? Express your thanks with words of appreciation. 23) Introduce a reader to your town, city, or region whats particularly unique and interesting about it? Aim for the style of language you find in guide books and travel section articles. 24) Where have you traveled to that was interesting? Describe your trip, your travel partners, your activities, and your experience of this new place. 25) What goals would you like to accomplish in the future? If you could do anything, what would you do? Whether youre an old pro or new to the finals game, theres undoubtedly some stress that accompanies those important end-of-year tests. While theres little to nothing you can do to erase finals stress altogether, you can make your life a little more pleasant by trying these simple tricks. Stock up on helpful items Sure, youll probably need to spend a ton of time studying, but there are other ways you can prepare as well. First, make sure you have enough snacks loaded with the brainpower youll need to get through a rough patch. Focus on foods that give you natural energy and make you feel healthythink fruit smoothies, spinach, etc. Youll also want to stock up on study supplies to get you through finals week. Things like notecards, extra pencils and pens, and headphones can make your study sessions more fun and more productive. Pick up a pen and paper There are a number of studies touting the benefits of creative writing as a form of stress relief, which is extra important during finals week. Notably, a study from University of Chicago found that students who spent just 10 minutes writing about how they felt performed significantly better on tests. Writing things down can also help you feel more organized, so dont hesitate to grab a journal or planner to keep a running to-do list. Similarly, writing things down may help you commit material to memory, so spend some time writing out outlines or other course material. Reward yourself A great way to make finals less stressful is to be prepared for them, and a great way to prepare for them is to develop a system of rewards for yourself. For every trial essay you complete, maybe you treat yourself to a favorite candy. For every practice test you ace, how about giving yourself 20 minutes on social media? You can even think biggerwork out a deal with your friends or parents to go on a fun vacation if you ace all your exams or buy yourself a new laptop if you beat your target score on your toughest test. Human beings are fairly simple creatures and rewards work! In advance, get a study group together and come up with a plan. Practice material in whatever way best suits the subject, always making sure your group stays on track. Study partners can also make great audiences, so take turns teaching each other material to better cement it in your minds. Ask questions, review notes, and compare interpretations of the text. Dont forget about break time During finals week, it can feel like there is absolutely no time to take a break. But remember, small breaks in study are extremely helpful in committing material to memory and increasing the longevity of your attention span. Plan your study time so that you have the luxury of break time and youll feel less overwhelmed throughout the week. Take a one-at-a-time approach to studying if the stress is really getting to you. Review one item, one class, one day at a time, checking things off your list as you go (which will also serve as a reminder of how much youve accomplished, motivating you to press on). Use technology to your advantage Youre going to school in a time where there are a variety of resources at your fingertipsdont be afraid to take full advantage of them. Whether you download an app that blocks social media from your phone or you take practice tests online, use the Internet to help your finals study preparation!
